• Opened in 2004 as Banyan Tree Maldives, Our Marine Lab • Serves the twin-island operation: Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Dhawa Ihuru (formerly known as Angsana Ihuru) • Became the very first resort-based facility in the Maldives designed for fieldwork conducted by visiting scientists • Mandate: promote marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods in local communities • Science-based approach used to track changes, implement efficient operations and deploy awareness programmes to provide an adaptive framework • Stated purpose: keeping natural attractions pristine to protect the planet
