Swimming & Snorkelling Safety Rules

• No lifeguard on duty — swimming is at your own risk
• Never swim alone — use the buddy system; don't overestimate swimming ability
• Conditions in open water differ from pool swimming; distance and direction affected by currents
• If caught in strong current: do not swim against it; swim diagonally across until you reach shore further down the beach
• Always wear full snorkeling equipment including fins
• Always evaluate conditions; do not go out in strong wind, choppy seas, bad weather; avoid swimming in the dark
• Never swim while intoxicated — alcohol is a contributory factor in one third of all major incidents in the water
• Even in Maldives, water is cooler than body temperature — risk of hypothermia; heat dissipates from muscles, arms, legs faster; limit swimming time
• Emergency procedures if problems occur: (1) Stay calm and don't panic; (2) Take off your mask and snorkel; (3) Turn onto your back and swim backwards; (4) Wave your hands to signal that you need help
