The Velaa Story / Brand Heritage

Velaa Private Island is the passion project of a couple, Radka and Jiří Šmejc, to create the world's most luxurious private island resort and personal home. Velaa means "turtle" in Dhivehi, inspired by the generations of sea turtles that inhabit the island and its coral reef. Designed by renowned Czech architect Petr Kolář of ADR. From an aerial view, the over-water villas form the head of a turtle while the island and jetties resemble the body and flippers. Colours and patterns of a turtle shell make up subtle design nuances throughout. Opening Date: 20th December 2013.

Marine Conservation & Coral Restoration Programme

Velaa has a dedicated marine team currently working on the biggest coral restoration programme in the Maldives. Guests can snorkel or scuba with the resident marine biologist who share their knowledge and expertise on the daily responsibilities of marine conservation. The foundation is recognised around the world. Guests have the opportunity to adopt an individual coral line to add to Velaa's intrinsic rainforest of corals and are awarded with a coral adoption certificate along with biannual updates of the coral development.

  • Private charter available on Velaa-branded 9-seater luxury seaplane
  • Private jet guests may land at Maafaru International Airport (26.6km from Velaa); 35-minute over-water transfer by luxury yacht or 7-minute seaplane transfer
  • Alternative: 50-seater domestic flight from MLE to Ifuru Domestic Airport followed by speedboat transfer
  • Seaplanes operate during daylight hours only; guests arriving after 3.30 PM or departing before 9 AM must overnight in Malé (Maldives time GMT +5)
  • Baggage allowance: 230kg total for private charter on Velaa-branded flight; 300kg for private charter on regular 14-seater flight; 20kg per person (excluding infants) for shared seaplane transfers
  • For large groups with excess baggage, an additional private seaplane or private speedboat must be booked
