Velaa was built by Jiří Šmejc — a Czech industrialist — for his family's own use, and only opened to outside guests after the design was complete. That order matters. Most Maldives resorts are designed for a guest profile; Velaa was designed for a particular family's patterns and then opened. The result is the most idiosyncratic high-end property in the country.
There are forty-three villas across a single private island in Noonu Atoll. The Velaa Private Residence — the showcase category — is a 1,324-square-metre four-bedroom water residence at the top of the island, accessible only by boat. A golf academy on a dedicated reef. An overwater Romantic Pool Residence so isolated you reach it on a private launch from your own jetty. A glass-domed wine cellar called the Wine Tower — the only one of its kind in the country — that holds 1,400 labels at three temperature zones.
"The wine cellar holds 1,400 labels at three temperature zones, in a glass dome above the lagoon."
The chef of Tavaru — the overwater Japanese restaurant — was poached from Roka London. The chef of Aragu — the contemporary signature — was poached from Michelin two-star De Karmeliet in Bruges. Service is led by Personal Hosts, one per villa, who pre-arrange every meal, every dive, every spa hour before you arrive. It is the most fully realised one-house-at-a-time philosophy in the country.
